This was used to starch clothing. It had a a clay-like texture when it was mixed, then it was put on the stove to cook until it became a thick substance. On wash day, this was used to starch the laundry. People would often use the laundry starch to get a certain look with their clothing. Some women ate starch, and still do to this day.
