Carter G. Woodson was born in Virginia to former slaves, James and Eliza. He was born into a very large, but very poor, family, so education was not easily accessible. He taught himself most of the basics of education by the age of 17. He later went on to become a writer and a scholar. Woodson published the Journal of Negro History in early 1916, and the Journal has been published every month since the start. In late 1915, Woodson met with a number of men and formed a group known as the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, in which he held the position of Executive Director until he passed away in 1950.
